Fast food restaurants have earned a reputation as places that sell unhealthy or “junk” food. That’s probably justified, but many of them are now taking steps to shake off that appearance, and are coming up with healthier options to offer consumers. Since breakfast is probably the meal we are most likely to grab “on the go,” it was a smart move on the part of the fast food restaurants to start offering it. For the health conscious among us, it’s helpful to know which fast food breakfast offerings are best.
#1 STARBUCKS SPINACH & FETA BREAKFAST WRAP
This certainly sounds like a healthy choice, and it turns out that it’s not too bad. It has approximately 290 calories, 6 grams of fiber, about 3.5 grams of saturated fat, 19 grams of protein and around 830 mg of sodium.
#2 MCDONALD’S EGG MCMUFFIN
This may be one of the true pioneers of fast food breakfast offerings since McDonald’s was one of the first to embrace the idea of serving a fast food breakfast. The Egg McMuffin boasts 300 calories, 2 grams of fiber, 5 grams of saturated fat, 18 grams of protein and 820 mg sodium.
#3 PANERA BREAD BREAKFAST POWER WITH HAM ON WHOLE GRAIN
That name is a mouthful, and fortunately, this breakfast appears to be as well. The details reveal that it has 340 calories, 4 grams of fiber, 7 grams of saturated fat, 23 grams of protein, and 820 mg of sodium. If you want to make it a bit healthier, you could order it minus the cheese, which will eliminate 5 grams of saturated fat, and drop the sodium down to about 570 grams.
#4 DUNKIN’ DONUTS EGG & CHEESE ON ENGLISH MUFFIN
This is a pretty shameless copy of the Egg McMuffin, but probably worth a try to see if you prefer the taste. The healthy details reveal that this breakfast sandwich contains 320 calories, 1 gram of fiber, 5 grams of saturated fat, 14 grams of protein, and 820 mg of sodium. A few more calories than the Egg McMuffin, but otherwise pretty comparable.
#5 AU BON PAIN EGG WHITES AND CHEDDAR BREAKFAST SANDWICH
With a name like Au Bon Pain, it may have been a bit more believable to hear that they offer healthier options for a fast breakfast. This sandwich has 250 calories, 6 grams of fiber, 6 grams of saturated fat, 20 grams of protein, and 550 mg of sodium. With it’s low calorie count and high fiber content, this is an option well-worth trying
#6 BURGER KING HAM OMELET SANDWICH
Burger King was probably the first real competition that McDonald’s faced in its lucrative fast food market. Like any savvy business, they were not going to be left behind when McDonald’s started offering quick breakfast choices. This sandwich has 290 calories, 1 gram of fiber, 4.5 grams of saturated fat, and 870 mg of sodium.
#7 JACK IN THE BOX BREAKFAST JACK
Not quite as well-known as some of the other fast food chains, Jack In The Box is not content to let the rest of them run away with the fast food breakfast market. Their Breakfast Jack contains 290 calories, 1 gram of fiber, 4.5 grams of saturated fat, 220 mg cholesterol, and 760 mg of sodium.
#8 JAMBA JUICE NO. 3 BERRY TOPPER IDEAL MEAL
This one is a real departure from the more familiar breakfast sandwich offerings. This souped-up smoothie contains yogurt and soy milk, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and organic pumpkin flaxseed granola. It has 300 calories, 7 grams of fiber, 0.5 grams of saturated fat, 9 grams of protein, and 85 mg of sodium in a 12-oz. serving.
#9 DENNY’S NO. 5 SCRAMBLED EGG WHITES, CHICKEN SAUSAGE, AND FRUIT
This offering looks a bit like a more traditional breakfast since it’s not served as a sandwich. Details reveal that it has 230 calories, 0 grams of saturated fat, 19 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber, and 447 mg of sodium.
#10 IHOP NO. 7 SIMPLE & FIT VEGGIE OMELETTE
This is another more traditional breakfast that looks much like a typical omelet with a side of green peppers, mushrooms, onions, and oven-roasted tomatoes. The stats stack up as follows: 320 calories, 1 gram of saturated fat, 21 grams of protein, 8 grams of fiber, and 420 mg of sodium.
