Doha Metro Red Line South to open for public on Wednesday

Doha: The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced the opening of Doha Metro Red Line South that will start its initial operation for the public this Wednesday, May 8. The line extends from Al Qassar to Al Wakra.

The initial operation includes 13 out of 18 Red Line stations: Al Qassar, DECC, QIC West Bay, Corniche, Al Bidda (Interchange Station), Msheireb (Interchange Station), Al Doha Al Jadeda, Umm Ghawalina, Al Matar AL Qadeem, Oqba Ibn Nafie, Free Zone, Ras Bu Fontas and Al Wakra.

The service will run from Sunday through Thursday from 8am to 11pm.

The Doha Metro is a rapid transit system currently under construction in Doha, Qatar’s capital city, that is scheduled to become operational by mid-2019. It will have four lines with an approximate overall length of 300 km and 100 stations.

It will be an integral component of the larger Qatar Rail network, which will include a long-distance rail for passengers and freight, linking Qatar to the GCC, and the Lusail LRT. Capable of reaching 100km/h, the Doha Metro will be one of the fastest driverless trains in the world.

Doha Metro will be operated and maintained for a duration of 20 years by RKH Qitarat, a joint venture formed by Hamad Group (51 %) and French transit operators Keolis and RATP Dev (49 %), on behalf of system owner Qatar Rail.

Lines The Doha Metro will ultimately consist of four lines opening in phases from 2019 with an eventual completion date of 2026.

The Red, Green and Gold Lines will radiate out from a central interchange at Msheireb in Downtown Doha with the Blue Line providing a semi-orbital service.
